For this week’s quick read, we will be covering the following topics or news relating to AWS in a quick glance:

  • The availability of new public datasets.
  • The Gartner laaS magic quadrant.
  • New Direct Connect Authorization support feature.

New AWS Public Datasets

AWS has made 9 new public datasets available through its AWS public datasets program. The new datasets come from companies such as Facebook, Yale, Allen institute for brain science and NOAA.

They cover categories in biology, for example, 100 TB of neurophysiology data representing neurons in mouse visual system. High-resolution population density maps and demographic estimates in the geospatial area. Public dataset programs aim to cover the cost for the high-value datasets to encourage the development of communities that benefit from having such shared datasets.

Gartner laaS Magic Quadrant

AWS is named as a prime leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for cloud infrastructure as a service. Gartner is an independent research and advisory company that release annual quadrants and reports detailing the challenges and the niche players, visionaries and leaders in different categories of the industry.

The quadrant for laaS has placed AWS in the highest placement of the Leaders Quadrant based on completeness of vision and ability to execute. This achievement has been continuing for the 9th consecutive year with AWS reaching the hike point.

Direct Connect supports Resource-based Authorization

AWS Direct Connect has released support for resource-based authorization, tag-based authorization and tag-on resource creation. Direct Connect is a cloud solution that makes it easy to establish a direct network connection for on-premises networks to AWS.

The newly released support authorization allows you to create IAM policies that creates reference either in AWS Direct Connect dedicated or hosted connections, interconnects, link aggregation groups, virtual interfaces or direct connect gateways using Amazon Resource Names (ARNs). This helps you to specify actions that users can take on particular resources available.

The tag-based permission authorization allows you to achieve the same result by touching tags to the resources that accept tagging. The final release of Tags and Creations allow you to develop direct connect resources which helps you to allocate a connection to a specific business unit or a resource group. If you use congestion with tag-based permission, it removes the step that pushes you to add authorized users to connect.
